Disney used its blockbuster D23 fan event — the company’s answer to San Diego Comic-Con, packed with major reveals from across its entertainment empire — to give “Star Wars” fans a long-awaited update on “Ahsoka.”
The showcase included a new look at “Ahsoka” Season 2, once again led by Rosario Dawson as former Jedi apprentice Ahsoka Tano. Disney’s recent “Star Wars” television slate has generated serious buzz, with series such as “Andor” winning over critics and audiences, while big-screen projects like “The Mandalorian and Grogu” have faced a tougher box office conversation. Against that backdrop, it is no surprise that D23 spotlighted one of the franchise’s most closely watched Disney+ titles. The series also features Natasha Liu Bordizzo, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Rory McCann — stepping into the role previously played by the late Ray Stevenson — Hayden Christensen returning as Anakin Skywalker, “Andor” standout Genevieve O’Reilly, and the voice of “Doctor Who” veteran David Tennant.

For anyone still catching up on Ahsoka Tano’s place in the “Star Wars” timeline, the essentials are straightforward. The character was first introduced in 2008’s “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” as Anakin Skywalker’s apprentice before eventually walking away from the Jedi Order to forge her own path. In “Star Wars Rebels,” her story deepened further when she learned that Anakin had also left the Jedi behind — though in a far darker way. Ahsoka did not make the leap to live action until Dawson debuted as the character in “The Mandalorian,” a breakout appearance that ultimately led to her own Disney+ series.
Viewers do not need to study every episode of “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” or “Star Wars Rebels” to understand “Ahsoka,” though both animated series add valuable context. At minimum, fans may want to revisit or binge Season 1 of “Ahsoka” before Season 2 arrives on Disney+ on January 20, 2027.
