Created by Silka Luisa, the miniseries continues the story that began with Ridley Scott’s 1982 classic “Blade Runner” and expanded in Denis Villeneuve’s 2017 film “Blade Runner 2049.” Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer star as Olwen, an aging replicant and blade runner, and Cora, her human partner. Set much further into the future than either movie, the Prime Video series could open up an entirely new chapter in the franchise while taking its mythology in unexpected directions.
Blade Runner 2099 promises fresh sci-fi mysteries
Mystery has always been central to the “Blade Runner” franchise. The original film intentionally left Harrison Ford’s Deckard’s replicant identity unresolved, while “Blade Runner 2049” built much of its story around hidden truths. It is no surprise, then, that “Blade Runner 2099” is keeping many of its secrets close.
So far, most of what is known about the series comes from the “Blade Runner 2099” panel at 2026 Comic-Con and the trailers released to date, including the most recent preview shown at New York Comic-Con. The eight-episode series appears to explore the nature of replicants and the possibility of curing their condition — presumably their predetermined short lifespan, a defining part of replicant existence since the franchise began.
