Actors often handle the enduring impact of their most memorable roles in varied ways. Eric Dane, best known for his portrayal of Dr. Mark Sloane on “Grey’s Anatomy,” candidly admitted he never really tuned into the show. Conversely, Jensen Ackles remains deeply connected to Dean Winchester, enthusiastically engaging in detailed discussions about the “Supernatural” series.
While Dane and Ackles are celebrated for these iconic roles, their careers extend beyond these singular performances. Both actors shared the screen in the 2025 Amazon Prime Video crime thriller “Countdown.” During production, they forged a strong friendship, a testament to Ackles’ warm rapport with his fellow cast members.
Tragically, the passing of Dane on February 19 meant that additional seasons of “Countdown” were not feasible. However, the series was already on the chopping block, as Amazon Prime Video had canceled several shows in 2025, including “Countdown,” after only one season. The decision was made without the cast and crew’s knowledge during filming, leaving the story unresolved at the conclusion of the first season.
“Countdown” centers on an investigation into a federal officer’s murder, unraveling a complex web of deceit and corruption at the highest levels. Ackles portrays Mark Meachum, an LAPD detective leading the undercover probe into the murder, while Dane plays Nathan Blythe, the FBI agent overseeing the mission.
The thirteenth episode of Season 1, titled “Your People Are in Danger,” inadvertently became the series finale. In this episode, Meachum is misled into pursuing the wrong suspect, and the true mastermind kidnaps a key member of his team, someone deeply significant to him. The episode concludes with the fate of the kidnapped agent hanging in the balance, a suspense that was intended to be resolved in Season 2. Sadly, with Dane’s untimely death and Amazon’s lack of interest, “Countdown” joins a lengthy list of shows abruptly ending on unresolved cliffhangers.
The sole season of Countdown ended on a major cliffhanger
“Countdown” follows the internal investigation into the murder of a federal officer, which ends up revealing a massive web of lies and corruption at the highest levels. Ackles plays Mark Meachum, the LAPD detective who was the on-the-field lead of the undercover investigation into the initial murder. Dane is Nathan Blythe, the FBI agent who is overseeing the entire operation.
The final episode of Season 1, Episode 13, “Your People Are in Danger” — which would retroactively become the final episode of the entire show — sees Meachum manipulated into tailing the wrong suspect.
Meanwhile, the newly-revealed actual mastermind behind the whole thing captures a member of Meachum’s team, someone who is especially personal to him. The episode ends in such a way that we don’t know what happens to the kidnapped agent, and fans were clearly meant to discover her fate at the start of Season 2. Unfortunately, with both the death of Dane and Amazon’s disinterest considered, there won’t ever be another season, making “Countdown” the latest series in a far too long line of canceled shows that ended on frustrating cliffhangers.
