How Long Did Rocky Spend in Tau Ceti in Project Hail Mary?

When Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) arrives in the Tau Ceti system in Project Hail Mary, the story reveals that he has spent years traveling through space. The film’s timeline indicates that Grace has been aboard the mission for three years, while 13 years have passed on Earth because of time dilation. What the movie does not explain, however, is how long Rocky has already been in the system. The Eridian alien simply appears, leaving that crucial detail unspoken.

Andy Weir’s novel provides the answer: Rocky has spent an astonishing 46 years in the Tau Ceti system, searching for a way to stop the Astrophage threat. As Grace learns, “He’s been stuck in this system for longer than I’ve been alive.”

Rocky endured that entire period alone. It is one of the movie’s more puzzling omissions, but the book fills in the missing history through a detailed exchange between the two astronauts. Rocky was one of 23 Eridians sent aboard a spacecraft Grace calls the Blip-A. During the journey, the crew was unknowingly exposed to radiation, became ill, and died one by one.

Rocky survived because he was the ship’s engineer. He worked in an insulated area at the rear of the xenonite spacecraft, where Astrophage tanks shielded him from the radiation. His survival was vital to both Erid and Earth, but it also condemned him to decades of isolation. Rocky had to live, eat, and even rest alone — an especially difficult fate for an Eridian, given the unusual way his species sleeps — while he searched the Tau Ceti system for a solution before Grace arrived.

Rocky’s 46-year search naturally raises another question: How old is the mineral-based alien himself? In Weir’s novel, Rocky says he has lived for 291 Earth years. Grace is stunned by the comparison, observing that Rocky is older than the United States and was born around the time of George Washington.

That still does not make Rocky especially old by Eridian standards. When Grace asks about his species’ life expectancy, Rocky gives a concise answer: “Average is six hundred eighty-nine years.” Grace realizes that some Eridians were already alive when Columbus reached North America. Rocky also explains that he has been with his mate, Adrian — a nickname Grace creates after hearing Rocky sing his mate’s musical name — for nearly 200 years.

The contrast with human life spans is enormous. Eridians do not face the same pressure to fit an entire life into a few short decades. Their species has centuries to grow, work, form relationships, and confront existential threats.

Rocky’s advantage is not limited to his long life. Erid also has far more time than Earth to respond to the Astrophage crisis. According to the calculations in Weir’s novel, Rocky and his home world have roughly 72 years before the organism’s effect on their star becomes a threat capable of destroying the Eridian race. By then, the book warns, “Earth will be a frozen wasteland and 99 percent of the human population will be dead.”

Earth’s deadline is considerably shorter. It will become uninhabitable in less than one-fifth of Erid’s remaining time, largely because of the difference in planetary heat. Rocky’s home world — which occupies the same region as the home of an iconic Star Trek alien — is larger, hotter, and surrounded by a much thicker atmosphere. As Grace explains, Erid stores far more heat in its atmosphere, while Earth is cooling rapidly. In 14 years, most humans will be dead.

The film does not emphasize these differences in planetary timelines, but the urgency remains clear: Grace and Rocky must work together as quickly as possible. Viewed side by side, however, the two species are not facing identical deadlines. Earth is under far greater immediate pressure, while Rocky’s most painful burden is the decades he spent alone in the Tau Ceti system. Fortunately, he finally finds a companion again — someone who can keep watch while he sleeps.
