Sinestro was once a Green Lantern himself. His path to the Corps began when Prohl Gosgotha crash-landed on Sinestro’s homeworld of Korugar. Sinestro claimed Prohl’s ring and left him to die, earning a place among the Green Lanterns. For a time, he served as a hero and even trained Hal Jordan, Earth’s first Green Lantern Corps member. However, his willingness to abandon Prohl hinted at the tyrant he would eventually become. After ruling Korugar through fear, Sinestro was exposed by the Guardians of the Universe—the Green Lanterns’ leaders. They stripped him of his ring and banished him to the Antimatter Universe.
Sinestro eventually escaped and kidnapped an entire town on Earth. By then, he wielded a yellow ring, a weapon that should have given him a major advantage because yellow is one of the Green Lanterns’ primary weaknesses. Hal Jordan still managed to defeat him through sheer willpower. At first glance, Sinestro may not seem like a threat to the wider universe, especially given how often he has been stopped. Yet as the comics expanded and his story became more complex, Sinestro gained greater power and accumulated far more impressive victories.
Sinestro leads the Yellow Lanterns and controls Parallax

Green Lanterns draw strength from willpower, while Yellow Lanterns gain power from fear—particularly their ability to inspire it in others. That power originates with the cosmic parasite known as Parallax. During the “Emerald Twilight” storyline, Hal Jordan becomes infected by Parallax and turns against the heroes. Sinestro was responsible for unleashing the entity in the first place, but the plan ultimately backfired when Hal, under Parallax’s influence, later killed him.
After being revived, Sinestro employed the same strategy again by creating the Sinestro Corps, essentially a rebranded Yellow Lantern Corps. He recruited powerful allies, including the Anti-Monitor and Superboy-Prime, before once again releasing Parallax. This time, the entity infected another Green Lantern, Kyle Rayner. Sinestro repeatedly risks unleashing Parallax because the tactic is so effective: the entity overwhelms both Hal Jordan and Kyle Rayner, driving them to commit horrific acts. Later, in “Green Lantern” #20, written by Geoff Johns as part of “The Wrath of the First Green Lantern,” Sinestro becomes Parallax’s host himself.
