LEGO Transformers Soundwave Review

Soundwave superior! Constructicon… also superior! The renowned Decepticon, known for multiple appearances in the Transformers movies, has now been brought to life in an extraordinary new form—LEGO. Designed for enthusiasts aged 18 and up, the LEGO Transformers Soundwave set invites you to leave your Autobot allies behind and embrace the Decepticon side.

The LEGO Icons set (10358) of Transformers Soundwave consists of 1,505 pieces, just three fewer than Optimus Prime’s 1,508-piece set. Standing at 33 centimeters, Soundwave is slightly shorter than the Autobot leader by two centimeters, yet still towers over Bumblebee, who holds the title for the smallest set of the trio. The set showcases a striking combination of deep navy and vibrant yellow, creating a visually appealing contrast. When compared to LEGO’s Optimus Prime and Bumblebee, Soundwave certainly stands out in terms of sheer aesthetic appeal.

Soundwave includes a variety of accessories, which, for an AFOL (Adult Fan of LEGO) like myself, can sometimes feel secondary to the main build. However, this Transformer comes with notable additions such as a rocket pod, laser blaster, and dart accessories. Additionally, the set features mini-figures of Transformers Ravage and Laserbeak, which cleverly transform into cassette tapes that can be swapped in and out of Soundwave’s chest compartment.

Much like the LEGO sets for Optimus Prime and Bumblebee, Soundwave can transform into its alternate form without any fear of breaking. I remember the initial anxiety of transforming Bumblebee, only to discover that the design was robust enough to handle it. Soundwave follows this tradition. However, as with Optimus Prime and Bumblebee, applying a bit of force is necessary to maneuver the arms and legs into the cassette tape form.

What truly impressed me about this set is the inclusion of a soundbox, a feature absent in the Optimus Prime and Bumblebee sets. Soundwave is equipped with an array of over a dozen phrases that can be activated by pressing the “play” button on his chest. Among the standout lines are: “Soundwave is superior,” “Decepticons are awesome,” “Danger! Autobots detected,” “Prepare for oblivion,” “Operation construction strike force assembled,” and “Initiate rebuild operation.” He also issues commands to Ravage and Laserbeak, interspersed with classic Transformers sound effects. This innovative feature had me wishing it had been included in earlier sets, although I’m thrilled it appears here.

LEGO’s Soundwave easily transforms into a cassette player

Building Soundwave was a more exhilarating experience than constructing Optimus Prime and Bumblebee. Who can resist a compelling villain? The process of assembling this Decepticon was perfectly challenging, without crossing into frustrating territory. I find myself eagerly anticipating a potential Megatron set. Although LEGO hasn’t made any announcements yet, it seems likely one could be on the way. Soundwave might not be the most powerful Decepticon, but it undeniably ranks among the coolest LEGO sets I’ve encountered.

In addition to the design that allows it to transform perfectly, I was really impressed with the soundbox that is noticeably absent on Optimus Prime and Bumblebee. Not only does Soundwave talk, he talks a lot. There are over a dozen phrases the builder can hear, by hitting the “play” button on Soundwaves chest. Some of the classic phrases the lieutenant speaks are: “Soundwave is superior,” “Decepticons are awesome,” “”Danger! Autobots detected,” “Prepare for oblivion,” “Operation construction strike force assembled,” and “Initiate rebuild operation.” Soundwave also says several commands to Ravage and Laserbeak, which are mixed between traditional Transformers sound effects. This new addition to LEGO’s Transformers really had me wishing it was available on prior sets in the same line, but I’m just happy to have it included here.

Soundwave proves we need more Decepticon LEGO sets

While I thoroughly enjoyed building Optimus Prime and Bumblebee, Soundwave was the more exciting build overall. Who doesn’t love a villain, honestly? Constructing the Deception was just challenging enough from start to finish, avoiding being overly difficult and frustrating. I couldn’t help but hope for a Megatron build in the near future. While LEGO hasn’t announced one just yet, we have to assume one is on the horizon. Soundwave might not be one of the most powerful Deceptions in the bunch, but he is bar far one of the coolest LEGO sets I’ve seen so far.

AFOLs must be enjoying the build overall because it’s currently on backorder at the time of this review. You can still order Soundwave for $189.99 on LEGO’s website, but it could take over 60 days before it’s shipped out.
