Mamdani's 'Great Recession' Fearmongering: Only Answer Is to Tax the Pants Off the Rich

New York’s newly elected mayor, Zohran Mamdani, is quickly discovering that the complexities of governance extend far beyond the campaign trail. The real challenge lies in balancing the city’s budget, ensuring efficient delivery of services, and maintaining the support of key allies and constituents.

The enthusiastic socialist is coming to grips with New York City’s serious financial troubles, and he has proposed three solutions. First, he attributes the blame to his predecessor, Eric Adams, and also points fingers at former Governor Andrew Cuomo. Next, he warns of an impending economic crisis that could rival the “Great Recession.” Lastly, he suggests a significant increase in taxes for wealthy individuals and corporations as a remedy.

However, Mayor Mamdani might soon realize, much like California’s progressive Governor Gavin Newsom, that raising taxes could prompt affluent residents and businesses to relocate, taking their financial resources with them. But that seems to be a concern for another day.

It’s all as easy as ABC, Zohran argued:

During a press conference on Wednesday, Mamdani accused Adams of underbudgeting important services that NYC residents “rely on every single day,” while “quietly leaving behind enormous gaps for the future.” Mamdani also accused former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) of extracting NYC’s “resources” and using the city’s revenues to “address state level holes, while withholding from the city what it was owed.”

“There is a massive fiscal deficit in our city’s budget to the tune of at least $12 billon. We did not arrive at this place by accident. This crisis has a name, and a chief architect,” Mamdani said. “In the words of The Jackson 5, it’s as easy as ABC. This is the ‘Adams Budget Crisis.’”

“We are speaking about a fiscal crisis at a scale greater than the Great Recession,” Mamdani maintained.

You know where this is going, right? Because the risk is so high, it’s therefore “time for the rich to pay their fair share.” We’ve heard that before, haven’t we?

It will require us to pursue every single avenue. That means looking inward into savings and efficiencies, that also means raising taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers, and the most profitable corporations.

When he says, “raising taxes,” he doesn’t mean in a little way:

During the press conference, Mamdani added that “if the top 1% of New Yorkers pay an additional 2% in income taxes,” they would not only be able to put NYC “back on firmer financial footing, but also build a strong city for everyone,” the Gothamist reported.

Adams wasn’t impressed with Mamdani’s blamecasting and defended himself on social media:

Now that the math doesn’t work, instead of owning the fact that he misled New Yorkers, he’s blaming me.
Let’s be clear: I left him over $8 BILLION in reserves.

[…]

“Free” isn’t free. It’s just a bill someone else has to pay.

The mayor plans to release his preliminary budget on February 17. Can’t wait to see that one.

We knew that the Mamdani era was going to bring in drama, silliness, hardcore socialist dogma, and more. Now it’s here, and that’s exactly what we’re getting.
