Paul Ince believes Manchester United should be targeting a move for Brighton’s Yves Bissouma to replace Fred in the heart of their midfield.

United’s midfield has come in for criticism in recent seasons with Scott McTominay and Fred singled out as potential weak leaks by fans and pundits.

The Red Devils are expected to splash the cash in the summer with West Ham’s Declan Rice thought to be top of their list but former United player Ince reckons Bissouma, who could leave the south coast side at the end of the season, could be a cheaper alternative.

‘You have to look at United’s recruitment,’ he told Genting Casino.

‘They didn’t know about Bissouma, now he’s at Brighton and might cost £40m. They didn’t know about [N’Golo] Kante, now he’s at Chelsea.

‘All these players have been about but why have United not spotted them?

‘They need to get someone like Bissouma because the midfield needs to change. Fred’s not the answer, McTominay is one of those who’s a good player but would be better with someone like Bissouma next to him.’

United also face uncertainty around Paul Pogba’s future with the Frenchman out of contract and yet to sign a new deal.

With Edinson Cavani set to leave at the end of the campaign and Anthony Martial also expected to depart following a loan spell with Sevilla, Ince feels a striker is also needed – but any move for Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland looks unlikely.

‘Is Pogba going to stay? I can’t see it. It’s not just about two midfield players,’ Ince added.

‘They need a striker, too. Haaland’s a tricky one because of the situation with his dad and [Roy] Keane at Old Trafford.

‘I can’t see him going to Old Trafford just based on that, and if there’s no Champions League he definitely won’t.’
