Kevin Campbell has backed Arsenal’s bid to sign Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus this summer, describing the striker as a ‘workaholic’.

Jesus, 25, has just one year left on his contract at the Etihad and is said to be available at the end of the season as he looks for a fresh challenge.

The Gunners have been searching for a top centre-forward ever since Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang departed in January to join Barcelona and have been heavily linked with a move for Jesus in the past week.

Campbell, the former Arsenal forward, thinks the Brazilian would be a ‘good’ addition to his old side as he praised his attitude and versatility across the front line.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said: ‘The great thing about Jesus is that he can play on the left and the right as well as through the middle. He is a goal threat and a workaholic who knows how to win.

‘Mikel Arteta obviously knows him very well from his time at City. I still think Arsenal will need another striker as well as him though. We are short in that department. I think Jesus would be a really good signing though.’

Jesus and Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta are well acquainted having worked together at City when the Spaniard was Pep Guardiola’s No.2.

A move to the Emirates may appeal to Jesus considering he has failed to convince Guardiola that he can be City’s first-choice striker ever since joining the club in 2017.

Despite starting and scoring in their last three victories over Watford, Real Madrid and Leeds United, Jesus struggled to oust Sergio Aguero as City’s No.9 and, this season, has fallen foul of Guardiola’s decision to play without a recognised centre-forward.

News that Erling Haaland, Borussia Dortmund’s hitman, may be arriving at the Etihad this summer will only heighten his playing concerns.

Arsenal are particularly keen on his signature with Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah set to leave this summer as their contracts run out.

Earlier this year, Arteta revealed the characteristics he is looking for in the Gunners’ new striker.

He said: ‘He puts the ball in the net, that’s priority number one. Goal threat. Any successful team needs enough goal threat in the squad. Without it, you have nothing. You can play good football but you need enough goal threat in the team.’
