Manchester United could scrap their pursuit of Kieran Trippier and keep Diogo Dalot as part of the first-team squad after he impressed in pre-season, according to reports.

The Red Devils have already been active this summer – signing Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane – but had also wanted to bring in a new, more attack-minded right-back to provide cover and competition for Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

However, the Manchester Evening News report that United’s transfer plans may have shifted in the past few weeks after Dalot made a strong case to be given the role of understudy to Wan-Bissaka.

The 22-year-old enjoyed a solid loan spell with AC Milan last season and has looked good in pre-season, playing against both Brentford and Everton – even scoring against the latter.

Dalot has received ‘positive feedback’ from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his coaching staff and there is a feeling that the Portuguese defender could alleviate the need to dip into the transfer market for a new right-back.

United had hoped to lure Trippier back to the Premier League, but Atletico Madrid are playing hardball over a fee and could demand as much as £30million.

That is far more than United are willing to pay – particularly for a player who turns 31 next month – and putting their faith in Dalot instead would allow those funds to be used on other areas of the squad instead.

Solskjaer is also keen to bring in a new defensive midfielder and had been linked with moves for West Ham’s Declan Rice and Rennes sensation Eduardo Camavinga.

For his part, MEN report that Dalot is happy with the opportunities presented to him in pre-season and believes he can provide competition for Wan-Bissaka.

United are expected to leave the decision over their backup right-back for this coming season until late in the window and could yet be tempted to offload Dalot if they receive a big offer, with the Red Devils holding out for a loan fee of around £4m.
