Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo is a doubt for Saturday’s Premier League encounter at Brentford.

The 18-year-old made his England senior debut against Brazil last Saturday before a man-of-the-match display against Belgium on Tuesday night.

But Mainoo began feeling unwell earlier this week and sat out United’s training session on Thursday.

On Friday, when asked his availability Ten Hag said: ‘I don’t know, we hope. Today he is here, not fully recovered but we still have many hours before tomorrow with kick off at 8pm.’

The midfielder has made 14 appearances in the Premier League this term and scored a crucial last-gasp goal in United’s dramatic 4-3 victory away to Wolves last month.

Mainoo’s meteoric rise continued with his first appearances for the England senior side during the international break, and Ten Hag said that he and his coaching staff will keep the teenager’s feet on the ground in the unlikely event that success goes to his head.

‘So far, he handles it very well and if he crosses the line, I as a manager and we as coaches will interfere,’ added the United boss.

Ten Hag returns to the scene of one of his lowest points as United manager when he takes on Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium, having suffered a 4-0 defeat there in his second game in charge last season.

Lisandro Martinez could return after eight weeks out with a knee injury, while United will also make a late decision over Casemiro, who missed Brazil’s friendlies against England and Spain due to injury.
