Newcastle United’s busy January transfer window is not slowing down as we near the end of the month, with the Magpies confirming the signing of Bruno Guimaraes and hunting down at least two defenders.
The Brazil international has completed his move from Lyon for a fee which could reach around £42m with add-ons and he will link up with his new teammates after his current stint on international duty.
The club’s battle against relegation from the Premier League is also set to be boosted by the arrival of Dan Burn from Brighton after they agreed a £13m fee for the giant defender.
The move is yet to be completed, but personal terms are very unlikely to be an issue and the 29-year-old should finalise the switch on Monday.
Newcastle are hoping to add at least one more defender before the window closes on Monday night, one of them being Aston Villa left-back Matt Targett.
The Athletic report that the Magpies have ‘registered their interest’ in the 26-year-old, although that a deal is some way off at this stage and is not likely to be completed in time.
Targett had been a regular in the Villa team since arriving from Southampton in 2019 but has recently lost his place at left-back to January signing Lucas Digne.
The Villains would certainly be tempted to cash in on him if a substantial bid came in from St James’ Park.
Eddie Howe wants to bring in another centre-back if possible, but the search has proven tricky after bids failed for Sevilla’s Diego Carlos.
Newcastle have been linked with a big offer for Wolves’ Conor Coady, while Arsenal’s Rob Holding and Tottenham’s Joe Rodon have also been mentioned.
The newly-monied Magpies have already brought in Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid and Chris Wood from Burnley this month.
