Urgent warning issued to Blue Badge holders after 'reports'

Local councils are responsible for issuing Blue Badge parking permits, and one authority has now delivered a firm reminder to badge holders. Although North East Lincolnshire Council directed its message at residents in the borough, the same rules apply nationwide. In a statement published on Tuesday, the council said it was restating the regulations after recent incidents of misuse.

The authority explained that Blue Badges are intended for people with mobility difficulties or significant health conditions, giving them access to designated accessible parking spaces. However, it stressed that the permit can only be used when the named badge holder is travelling in the vehicle. Anyone found using a badge improperly could face enforcement action, including a fine and possible prosecution.

Misuse can result in penalties of up to £1,000, and the badge holder may also have the permit withdrawn. The council added that Civil Enforcement Officers have the power to request an inspection of a Blue Badge, and refusing to allow this is a criminal offence.

North East Lincolnshire Council said it had recently been alerted to cases of Blue Badge misuse in the area. It is now urging people to remember why the scheme exists and to ensure permits are used only in line with the rules.

Councillor James Sawkins, portfolio holder for safer and stronger communities, said the permits are vital for many people who need support getting around North East Lincolnshire. He warned that using them incorrectly, regardless of the circumstances, is unacceptable.

He added that Blue Badges are issued solely for the benefit of the named holder. The rule, he said, is straightforward: if the badge is not yours, or the holder is not with you, it must not be used.

The council confirmed that any report of suspected misuse would trigger a full investigation. It said those believed to be involved may then be asked to attend a voluntary interview, with further action considered afterwards.

What to do with an old blue badge?

Anyone who has an old Blue Badge that is no longer required can either destroy it themselves or return it to the council.
