Diabetes is at ‘all-time high’ – doctor shares 3 ‘red flag’ symptoms to watch out for

Diabetes is a chronic condition characterized by elevated blood sugar levels. Most individuals affected by this condition have type 2 diabetes, which often results from lifestyle factors such as obesity and insufficient physical activity.

According to Diabetes UK, the number of people living with diabetes in the UK has reached an unprecedented level, with estimates exceeding 5.8 million. Their research indicates that nearly 4.6 million individuals have been diagnosed with diabetes, while approximately 1.3 million may have undiagnosed type 2 diabetes. Recognizing the symptoms is crucial, and Dr. Mohan Sekeram, known on TikTok as @docmerton, highlights three significant warning signs to watch for.

1. Frequent urination

On average, people typically urinate between four to seven times a day. However, if you notice an increase in frequency, especially if you wake up multiple times during the night, it could be a sign that your kidneys are working overtime to clear excess sugar from your blood.

To address this, try reducing fluid intake after 7 PM and avoid caffeinated beverages after 5 PM. Persistently waking up for bathroom trips during the night might indicate an underlying issue that requires attention.

2. Excessive thirst

If you find yourself drinking more than four liters a day and still feeling unquenchable thirst, it could be an indicator of high blood sugar levels.

3. Tiredness

When sugar is unable to enter your cells to provide them with energy, your kidneys must work extra hard to eliminate the excess sugar. This can result in feelings of tiredness, weakness and fatigue.

It’s a “red flag” if you notice that you are too weak to perform daily tasks that you used to do effortlessly, or you feel drained after having a meal.

Dr Amir Khan also sees tiredness as a key symptom of diabetes. In a recent health podcast called No Appointment Necessary, he said: “Tiredness is the most common presenting symptom of type 2 diabetes.”
