Experts call for 'Great British Sleep Reset' to combat modern sleep challenges

A recent survey involving 2,000 adults has shed light on the troubling sleeping patterns prevalent across the nation. Crafted with input from sleep experts, the survey aimed to unearth potential factors contributing to insomnia and sleep disturbances. Alarmingly, the findings suggest that 30% of participants might be grappling with moderate to severe sleep issues. A straightforward scoring method dissected responses to reveal frequent challenges like difficulty falling asleep, nocturnal awakenings, and the impact of poor sleep quality on daily activities.

The analysis categorized scores between 13 and 16 as indicative of moderate sleep concerns, a group that encompasses about 21% of respondents. Meanwhile, a smaller segment, 9%, was identified as facing significant sleep problems, marked by scores of 17 or higher. This is perhaps unsurprising given that 59% of those surveyed acknowledged never having encountered so many hurdles to achieving restful sleep as they do now.

This research, commissioned by Silentnight, serves as a rallying cry to revolutionize sleep habits by dismantling barriers to rest. Part of this initiative is the creation of a 3-step sleep reset plan designed to enhance sleep quality.

Critical indicators of severe sleep issues include persistent difficulties in falling asleep, frequent night awakenings, daytime dysfunction, and premature morning awakenings.

Delving deeper, the study discovered that 30% of participants experience multiple awakenings each night. Meanwhile, one in seven finds it challenging to fall asleep, taking upwards of 30 minutes each attempt. Furthermore, 19% reported that their sleep deprivation severely affects their daily performance, including at work and during routine tasks, every day.

Despite the widespread acknowledgment—by more than half of respondents—that sleep is crucial for health and wellbeing, 24% have resigned themselves to perpetual tiredness. Additionally, a third of the participants believe that in today’s hectic world, sleep has become a lesser priority.

Silentnight’s sleep expert, Kathryn Pinkham, said: “It’s a real concern that sleep problems have never been greater, yet the advice so often shared doesn’t address the root causes. We’re constantly told how important sleep is, but the quick fixes and generic tips simply aren’t enough.

“Our call for a ‘Great British Sleep Reset’ highlights how poor sleep impacts not just how we feel, but how we function day to day.”

Among the top worries to keep people awake at night were health concerns, personal financial worries, or relationship issues. While as many as 30% were kept staring at the ceiling re-living things they’d said or done that day which they regretted.

Life moments which have impacted the nation’s ability to get a decent kip were found to include job interviews, moving home, and for 28% of women, the menopause.

As a result of a lack of sleep, 40% have struggled with headaches, and the same amount haven’t been as productive as they would have liked.

For 37%, feelings of being overly emotional or irritable caused them problems, while three in 10 experienced feelings of anxiety and 21% made poor diet choices. With 17% making mistakes at work that could have been avoided, according to the OnePoll.com figures.

Silentnight’s sleep expert, Kathryn Pinkham, added: “There is so much misinformation out there that it can leave us feeling overwhelmed and unsure where to start.
