Water may be fundamental to life but, just as you can have too little, there is an upper safe limit. Research suggests that if you drink too much water you’ll have an array of unpleasant side-effects.

Scientists recommend drinking eight glasses of water a day, roughly the equivalent of two liters of water. This seems like a lot but water isn’t just consumed when you drink it. Water is present in all types of drinks and a variety of foods. All of this liquid contributes to the water you drink.

Why Water Is So Important

Water is in every cell of your body. It helps to move oxygen and nutrients into the cells and carries toxins away, allowing them to be eliminated from the body. Water plays a role in keeping your skin cells looking plump and fresh, ensuring your skin has a healthy glow.

To give you an idea of how important water is, the average human can only survive 3 days without it.

Taking Clean Water For Granted

But, it’s not just about the availability of water. You probably assume that the water coming out of your faucet is safe to drink. After all, it has been treated by your local treatment works. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case.

As the water travels between the plant and your home it has the opportunity to pick up more bacteria and little bits of sediment. They are too small to be seen by the naked eye but they will be detrimental to your health.

Add to this concerns over the addition of chlorine and fluoride to the water and you have a dangerous clear liquid in your home that you’re happy to consume.

That’s why so many people invest in water purifiers, to ensure that the water they are drinking at home is safe, and tastes great.

Too Much Water?

So, if you should be aiming to drink two liters a day, is there an upper limit? The answer is yes. Drinking more than three liters a day can lead to water intoxication.

However, at this point, it is important to note that everyone is different. If you’re used to drinking two and a half liters of water a day then that’s fine. The exact amount of water you need will be affected by your activity level.

The reason you need to think about your water consumption is that drinking too much will cause your sodium levels t drop. This is because the sodium will become more diluted, the more you drink. Sodium is actually a regulator inside your body, it controls how much water is delivered to different areas of your body. If you’ve drunk too much water your body can decide where the water should go and what should be excreted.

The result is bloatedness. Your cells will literally swell to absorb the water. Unfortunately, brain cells have very little room to swell, causing brain fog.

F you’re experiencing brain fog regularly you may want to cut back on your water consumption to see if it helps the brain fog lift.
