A renowned heart surgeon has shared crucial advice for maintaining health after the age of 40, emphasizing four key practices to avoid.

The crucial information was shared in a recent video posted to TikTok by Dr Jeremy London, a heart surgeon who is based in Georgia.

With more than 25 years of experience as a board-certified cardiovascular surgeon, this doctor has attracted significant attention online, amassing over 2.6 million views on his insightful video.

Interestingly, the first two recommendations he offers are universally applicable, regardless of age.

Dr. London advises steering clear of both alcohol and smoking.

“To set yourself up for long-term health, it’s best to limit or eliminate alcohol consumption,” he stated at the start of his video.

He further explained, “Alcohol is harmful to every cell in your body.”

The surgeon admitted that he understood that it can be difficult for some to cut out alcohol, and that it was a ‘personal choice’.

'If you really want to set the stage for yourself long-term, limit or remove alcohol,' he explained in the beginning of the video (stock image)

‘Just be thoughtful,’ he suggested.

He shared similar points about smoking and vaping.

‘I don’t think anybody would disagree that it’s bad for you,’ Dr London explained.

‘It increases your risk of lung cancer, heart attack, and stroke, don’t vape, don’t smoke,’ he said.

And third on his list of things to avoid after you turn 40?

‘Don’t trade sleep for other activities,’ he warned, as he acknowledged that this can be something even he has trouble with.

Though, rest is something that people really need to make a priority, the doctor said, especially as we age.

‘Recovery is so important throughout our lives, but it’s really important as we get older,’ he explained.

Last but not least, Dr London urged viewers over the age of 40 to ‘avoid toxic people.’

‘Focus and nurture on your relationships with the people you care about and love, because in the end, that’s what truly matters,’ he shared.

In the comments section, many seemed to agree with the doctor, as they echoed his advice.

‘Quitting alcohol seems hard at first because it’s so cultural, but it’s so worth it to quit/reduce drinking. Better sleep, better body, skin looks better. No hangovers. Improvements in every way,’ one person wrote.

Another seconded, ‘Love the last point the most. People don’t understand how bad a toxic relationship can be in your health.’

‘The most important point here for people in US is the sleep. Overworked and overburdened people, and no one takes it seriously,’ someone else typed.

One commenter wrote, ‘My husband and I don’t drink because we just don’t feel the need or care for it. Our skin looks wonderful lol.’
