People under 50 urged to checked for 6 symptoms that could be cancer

There is a growing trend of cancer diagnoses among individuals under the age of 50, which has led a medical professional to emphasize the importance of recognizing early warning signs. Many younger adults tend to dismiss these early symptoms, attributing them to stress, poor diet, or lifestyle choices, rather than consulting their general practitioner.

Dr. Jiri Kubes, a radiation oncologist, warned that ignoring these early symptoms could lead to a delayed diagnosis, which in turn could impact the effectiveness of treatment. He urged younger people to be attentive to their bodies and trust their instincts when something feels off.

According to Cancer Research UK, the rate of cancer among individuals aged 25 to 49 has surged by 24% from 1995 to 2019. Despite this increase, it is important to note that 90% of cancer cases still occur in those over 50 years old.

The main risk for younger individuals is the possibility of delaying their own diagnosis by ignoring symptoms. Dr. Kubes remarked, “The aim is to raise awareness, not induce fear. Cancer is no longer a risk limited to older generations, and recognizing this fact is crucial.” He outlined key symptoms that should not be overlooked by those under 50.

  • Persistent changes in bowel habits
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Ongoing fatigue that doesn’t improve with rest
  • Lumps or swelling that don’t go away
  • Frequent headaches or neurological changes
  • Unusual bleeding or pain that persists

The doctor provided guidance on differentiating between potential cancer symptoms and common issues associated with modern lifestyles: “What counts are persistent changes. Continuous digestive problems, unexplained weight loss, unusual lumps, shifts in bowel habits, or fatigue that doesn’t improve should not be disregarded, even if you are in your 20s or 30s.”

While these symptoms should not cause undue alarm, seeking medical advice is advisable. Dr. Kubes emphasized, “The duration of symptoms is more critical than their severity,” suggesting that any signs lasting for several weeks should prompt a consultation.

Catching cancer early can significantly alter patient outcomes and determine how intensive treatment must be. For younger individuals with many years ahead, this distinction can profoundly affect their long-term well-being.

The medical director at Prague’s Proton Therapy Center urged: “If something feels wrong and it doesn’t go away, get it checked. Being proactive is not overreacting. Early action saves lives.”

Scientists are investigating why increasing numbers of young adults are being diagnosed with cancer. Dr Kubes suggested numerous elements of contemporary existence may be contributing factors. Risk factors for cancer that are common in modern life:
