'Super flu' warning as 1.5m Brits 'should stop taking meds'

As the new year unfolds, the perennial battle against winter ailments such as colds and flu begins anew. With a so-called ‘super flu’ now in circulation, many are on the hunt for the most effective ways to fend off illness.

For the estimated 1.5 million Britons currently using weight loss injections, this flu season poses a unique challenge. The key question they face is whether to continue their injection regimen while under the weather.

Jason Murphy, a pharmacy leader and weight loss expert at Chemist4U, said, “With thousands already affected by the flu and an increasing number of people in the UK on weight loss injections, many might be experiencing their first flu season while on these medications. While side effects such as headaches, fatigue, and nausea from weight loss injections can mimic flu symptoms, they’re typically short-lived, lasting from a few days to a few weeks.”

Murphy stressed the importance of differentiating between medication side effects and flu symptoms: “It’s crucial to recognize the distinction. Side effects from weight loss injections originate from the medication and mainly impact digestive functions, blood sugar levels, and other bodily processes. In contrast, flu symptoms are due to a viral infection that primarily affects the respiratory system. Understanding this difference is key to managing symptoms safely.”

He advised that if illness affects your ability to eat regular meals or dampens your appetite, it might be wise to postpone your next dose until you’ve fully recovered. This approach can help reduce the risk of malnutrition and dehydration. When you’re unable to consume food and liquids normally, using medications that suppress appetite, such as Mounjaro or Wegovy, could hinder flu recovery. Adequate intake of food and fluids is essential to provide the vitamins and nutrients needed to combat infection.

Warning signs and ‘crucial’ thing to do

Murphy also highlighted the importance of staying hydrated, especially when taking medications like Mounjaro and Wegovy during illness. Proper hydration aids digestion, maintains blood sugar control, and prevents constipation. During flu season, dehydration can exacerbate both medication side effects and flu symptoms.

He also highlighted some warning signs to look out for, including darker yellow urine, dry mouth and mild headaches. However, he noted that people often fail to recognise other indicators such as unusually hard bowel movements and excessive tiredness.

Jason recommended considering an electrolyte drink or rehydration solution to help increase fluid intake and maintain hydration, particularly during this time of year.

He said: “While experiencing the flu, it’s also recommended to rest and sleep, keep warm and take paracetamol or ibuprofen to lower your temperature and treat aches and pains. By paying attention to flu symptoms – high temperatures, aching body, dry cough, sore throat, loss of appetite, etc -, following the above steps can help you get better quicker and back to your usual dosing. If you have concerns about managing your medication during illness, consult with your prescriber, doctor or pharmacist for personalised guidance.”
