The Curing Barn has issued a recall for its British Bresaola after the discovery of Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that can lead to serious health issues including meningitis, as well as symptoms like diarrhea and muscle aches. This alert was released by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) on Sunday, April 5, 2026.

British Bresaola is a high-quality, air-dried beef charcuterie. It is crafted using grass-fed British beef topside or silverside, which is cured with a mixture of herbs, spices, and occasionally wine, then air-dried over a period of three to four months.

The recall specifically targets The Curing Barn British Bresaola with the product code WLRC J1Z2 0WD0 J85J. The affected packages are 60g in size, and they display a use-by date of June 10, 2026.

The FSA has warned that Listeria monocytogenes can cause symptoms akin to the flu, including fever, muscle aches, chills, nausea, and diarrhea. They also noted that in rare instances, the infection can escalate to more severe complications such as meningitis.

Particularly susceptible to listeria infections are individuals over the age of 65, pregnant women and their unborn babies, infants younger than one month, and those with compromised immune systems.

“Some people are more vulnerable to listeria infections, including those over 65 years of age, pregnant women and their unborn babies, babies less than one month old and people with weakened immune systems.”

‘Do not eat’

It continued: “The Curing Barn is recalling the above British Bresaola. Point of sale notices will be displayed in all retail stores that are selling this product and on their website.

“These notices explain to customers why the product is being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the product.

“If you have bought the above product, do not eat it. Instead, return it to where you bought it from for a full refund.”

About product recalls and withdrawals

The FSA explained: “If there is a problem with a food product that means it should not be sold, then it might be ‘withdrawn’ (taken off the shelves) or ‘recalled’ (when customers are asked to return the product). The FSA issues Product Recall Information Notices to let consumers and local authorities know about problems associated with food.

“In some cases, a ‘Food Alert for Action’ is issued. This provides local authorities with details of specific action to be taken on behalf of consumers.”
