WH Meeting Was About FIFA - but Trump Makes News by Saying He's Considering Drug Strikes Inside Mexico

On Monday, President Donald Trump convened a meeting at the White House to highlight the anticipated FIFA World Cup and the economic boost it is expected to deliver to the United States. Scheduled to begin this June, the tournament will take place in 11 cities across the country. President Trump projected that the event could generate $30 billion in revenue and lead to the creation of 200,000 jobs nationwide.

While the World Cup’s economic prospects are certainly noteworthy, President Trump also addressed his administration’s ongoing efforts to combat the influx of illegal drugs, such as fentanyl, that have devastated communities across the nation. Expressing frustration with insufficient international cooperation, he mentioned the possibility of conducting operations within Mexico to curb the drug trade:

The statement was further elaborated upon in a subsequent tweet:

Recent actions by the administration, including 22 targeted strikes on suspected drug-smuggling vessels in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific, underscore Trump’s determination to tackle the drug crisis head-on.

The above tweet continues:

“I didn’t say I’m DOING it…but I’d be proud to do it. We’d save millions of lives.”

“Would I do it on land? I absolutely – look, every boat we knock out, we save 25,000 American lives. Not to mention the DESTRUCTION of families!”

“Mexico…some big problems over there. If we had to, would we do there, what we did in the waterways? There’s almost NO DRUGS coming through the waterways. Down like 85%. I don’t know who the 15% are!”

With his recent moves, including 22 strikes on suspected drug-running boats in the Caribbean and the eastern Pacific Ocean, we’ve been seeing that Trump is not fooling around in his efforts to end the scourge.

Trump continued, vowing to continue speaking with authorities in other countries, but also making it clear that they know he intends to stop the smuggling with or without their help.

“I’ve been speaking to Mexico. They know how I stand. We’re losing hundreds of thousands of people to drugs,” he said. “So now we’ve stopped the waterways, but we know every route.”

“We know every route, we know the addresses of every drug lord. We know their address; we know their front door. We know everything about every one of them. They’re killing our people. That’s like a war,” he said.

He concluded that he would “probably go into Congress” if he were to ramp up military action. “Let me just put it this way: I am not happy with Mexico.”

As we reported, violence erupted in our southern neighbor over the weekend as protesters took to the streets to demonstrate against corruption and safety issues.

Tensions have also been on the rise with Venezuela and its dictator, Nicolás Maduro, and the administration has sent the Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group into the region’s waters in a powerful show of force aimed at enforcing Trump’s directive “to dismantle Transnational Criminal Organizations and counter narco-terrorism in defense of the Homeland.”
