Jacksonville rally demands McNeil arrest probe reopening

Dozens gathered to demand that prosecutors reopen an investigation into the violent February arrest of McNeil.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A large group gathered in front of the State Attorney’s Office in downtown Jacksonville on Saturday, urging prosecutors to revisit the investigation of William McNeil Jr.’s forceful arrest back in February.

Earlier this year, McNeil was stopped by Jacksonville sheriff’s officers during a traffic incident. Footage from body cameras revealed officers pulling him from his car, subduing him on the ground, and arresting him. Additionally, viral footage captured on McNeil’s phone shows officers striking him in the face, leading to widespread public anger.

“He’s the sort of young person that any parent, regardless of race, would be proud to have. They stopped him just because he was driving in a less affluent neighborhood with dreadlocks,” remarked McNeil’s uncle.

The State Attorney’s Office later determined the officers involved did not violate any criminal laws — a decision activists say must be revisited.

“We need to ensure the officers are dismissed, charged, and fully prosecuted, or nothing less. That’s the justice we seek,” stated Samuel Hunter, a community organizer.

Fourteen local groups, among them the Jacksonville Community Action Committee, are advocating for the investigation to be reopened and for complete accountability.

JSO says it cannot comment on the case due to pending litigation. But protesters say silence is not an option.

“As his legal team provides guidance, we respect their advice and McNeil’s family’s wishes. We’ll be right there throughout, using our presence and voices to pressure those in authority to ensure justice is upheld,” Hunter explained.

Organizers say Saturday’s rally was only the beginning — and if the State Attorney doesn’t respond, more protests could follow.
