Pooler food pantry closes after serving thousands - now searching for a new home

POOLER, Ga. () — A longstanding Pooler food pantry, known as Pooler Loaves and Fishes, which has provided nourishment to thousands over the years, is currently without a facility to store food or aid families. Having operated for 15 years, the pantry was compelled to vacate its premises this past weekend.

This weekend signaled a poignant final food handout for Loaves and Fishes, along with associated initiatives like Backpack Buddies. As they faced their moving deadline, the pantry’s fate remains uncertain, with many community members already feeling the impact of this impending loss.

Loaves and Fishes officially left the premises of Pooler First Baptist Church, having served there for nearly three years. On Saturday, volunteers dedicated themselves to relocating refrigerators, storage racks, and other supplies to temporary storage, receiving assistance from Gateway Church, families from Benedictine Military School, and even a horse trailer. Nevertheless, despite these efforts, the organizers acknowledge they have not found a permanent location. Without an adequate space, they are unable to serve food from their current cargo container due to safety regulations.

“They really are down in the dumps right now. They feel like they’ve been hit in the stomach, and technically, they have. Because when we’re not going to be here to fill those stomachs, there’s nothing we can do. I wish we had a truck we can go around with, but it’s not practical because we feed so many people,” explained Bonnie O’Leary, the Volunteer Coordinator for Loaves and Fishes.

Leaders say they’ve had churches and schools turn them away, and high rent prices in Pooler are making it harder to find an affordable solution. Their GoFundMe has raised just over $5,500, but without more support, hundreds could go hungry.

The pantry served 37 families, over 100 people, during their final distribution before shutting down operations.

“It was a rough day. These people need food. Where are the people who are going to step up and help us? Where are you? You want to help us? Knock at our door,” said O’Leary.
