Second drowning reported on Hunting Island

BEAUFORT COUNTY, S.C. () — The Beaufort County Coroner’s Office (BCCO) reported a drowning at Hunting Island State Park.

On Friday, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded to a call for a 38-year-old male.

BCCO later identified the man as Paul Peters from Indian Trail, North Carolina. Peters died at on the scene.

This is the second drowning at Hunting Island and third this week in the Lowcountry.

Steven Thackston, 65, was found at Hunting Island floating in the water and was later pronounced dead July 1.

Earlier this week, 69-year-old William King drowned on Hilton Head Island at Coligny Beach.

BCCO wants to remind the public to stay cautious of rip currents.

Rip currents are powerful streams of water that can carry individuals away from the coast, leading to exhaustion while attempting to return to shore and potentially resulting in drowning. These currents frequently develop near features such as bridges, so it’s crucial to swim within the vicinity of a lifeguard or use a flotation device for safety.
