CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — A listener-supported radio station in Central Illinois is celebrating after nearly 45 years on the air.

On Sunday, WEFT-FM, Champaign-Urbana’s community radio station, hosted its annual street party known as WEFT-Fest. Organizers described WEFT-Fest as both a celebration of its listeners and a birthday event for the station.

“What the radio station provided back then is still what it provides now. It’s an opportunity for people who feel like they aren’t being heard to get on the radio station. We’re all volunteers, so if somebody wants to have a show they can, and express their opinions. Whether it be musically, politically, community issues,” explained Eric Bohlen, the station manager.

The festival featured live music, local vendors, a raffle, and even a birthday cake. Performers included Kittens Incorporated, Mousepad The Band, Sass, and The K-Tels with the Murder Hornets.

The event took place on Market Street in Downtown Champaign from 2-6 p.m. You can learn more about WEFT and its annual festival online.
