AUGUSTA, Ga () – This marker is the newest addition to the Georgia Historical Marker Program.

It shares the story of Congregation Children of Israel — and the synagogue in downtown Augusta.

“We recognized it was an exciting opportunity to not only narrate the history of Augusta’s Jewish community but also the broader history of Jews in America. Many immigrants arrived in Georgia and the U.S., and they are part of the oldest congregation in Augusta. The synagogue holds the distinction of being the oldest standing one in Georgia, making this a thrilling day,” stated Breana James, who is the Historical Marker and Program Associate at the Georgia Historical Society.

Dozens showed up to the unveiling to show their support.

Many spoke at the event including the Augusta Jewish Museum President, Jack Weinstein.

“This marker is significant as it represents the next step in realizing Jack Steinberg’s vision to preserve the 1869 Children of Israel synagogue,” mentioned Weinstein.

Jack Steinberg was the founding president of the Augusta Jewish Museum and worked to educate locals on Augustas Jewish contributions since 1802.

The museum initially applied for this marker in 2021. With this recent approval, they are hopeful it will attract more visitors to the museum, allowing them to delve into its rich history.

“It’s incredibly important to the Jewish community, specifically in Augusta. I feel that a lot of people aren’t aware of the Jewish community, they’re not aware of any cultural groups outside of their own, so it’s good to share that history in any way we can,” Russo said.

If you wish to see the marker it is at the Augusta Jewish Museum located at 525 Telfair St.
