Investigation underway after fatal shooting at Beaufort complex

BEAUFORT, S.C. — The Beaufort Police Department (BPD) is currently investigating a shooting that occurred early on Sunday morning, leaving one individual deceased.

was on scene all day with investigators and neighbors working to learn more details on the incident.

The incident took place around 2:30 a.m. at the Cross Creek Apartment Homes in Beaufort. Upon arrival, officers discovered a victim with gunshot injuries, who unfortunately succumbed to the wounds.

Residents of Cross Creek apartments attempted to recount the number of gunshots they heard this morning before stepping outside to observe the situation.

“All of a sudden I heard four or five really loud gunshots, like boom, boom, boom,” said one resident in the Cross Creek complex.

Another resident told they “heard about 5-8 shots.”After hearing the gunshots, they said they went outside to check out the scene.

That’s when they said they discovered the results of what looked to be a fatal shootout.

“Next thing I know, I see police everywhere. I see like casings. And it was it was a lot,” said a resident.

The BPD is leading the investigation, with support from the Town of Port Royal Police Department (TPRPD) and the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO).

Local authorities could not provide details on how the event unfolded but confirmed the victim was male and passed away at the hospital following the shooting.

Neighbors said they didn’t know the man but had seen him a few times around the complex. They believe he was not a resident.

“I just knew he was a young man,” said a resident.

“I’d seen him. He minded his business. He goes and comes and goes straight to the house,” said another resident.

Neighbors also said they’re not processing the shooting well, stating that the shooting isn’t a random or rare incident in the complex.

“It is very frustrating, especially when you expect to feel safe where you live,” shared a resident. “Like things happen everywhere, don’t get me wrong. But when it’s a constant, it can get frustrating, especially when there’s nothing done to improve it.”

has yet to get word on the male victim’s identity.

The incident remains under active investigation. Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact Investigator Jayne at 843-322-7972.
