SAVANNAH, Ga. () — A group of middle school girls visited this afternoon for a behind the scenes look at broadcast journalism.

The students from 5th to 8th grade are engaged in the Precious Gems mentoring initiative, which is part of Gamma Sigma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

The program focuses on mentorship, community service and exposure to opportunities they might not otherwise experience.

Tina Tyus-Shaw warmly welcomed the girls and narrated her journey into the field of journalism. Meanwhile, Kris Hummer, the executive director of digital content, offered insights into the creation and distribution of online content.

Scott Roberts, the Chief Meteorologist, conducted an informative session on weather prediction. He emphasized the importance of science and math in the field of meteorology, providing students with a hands-on experience using the green screen.

“I offered to experiment with the green screen myself, trying out the pointing, and I learned about Hurricane Erin and how they select hurricane names,” shared Bailey Brown.

“I discovered that a career related to weather is quite intricate, presenting many challenges, but also numerous opportunities for success,” mentioned Malaiya Townsend.

“As a child, I enjoyed watching the news with my grandma. The newscasts and weather reports on TV always fascinated me,” commented Minniyah Shields.

The visit concluded with the girls taking turns presenting the weather. At least two expressed their interest in becoming meteorologists.

The Precious Gems program continues to provide young girls with educational experiences and leadership development opportunities throughout the Savannah area.
