NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. – Collaborating with the City of North Augusta, the Georgia Cancer Center has facilitated the installation of a sunscreen dispenser station, which was introduced on Monday.

North Augusta’s Mayor Briton Williams joined members of the Georgia Cancer Center for a ribbon cutting on Sept. 8 at Boeckh Park on Hammond’s Ferry.

The dispenser was installed in response to rising melanoma rates, according to the Georgia Cancer Center.

“Experiencing sunburn five times or more throughout your life doubles your chances of developing melanoma,” shared Nyree Riley, the community outreach director at the Georgia Cancer Center. “It’s crucial not to ignore risks that are potentially harmful. There are now nine sunscreen dispensers along the greenway and five along the canal. So, if you’re jogging in these areas and notice you’re not protected, you can easily use these dispensers.”

The dispenser is free for anyone to use.
