SAVANNAH, Ga. — Prepare for a mix of mild and humid weather over the next 24 hours, with a chance of isolated storms setting the stage for a significant temperature drop as the new week begins.

On Saturday, some areas experienced passing showers and a few storms. Notably, a storm in the southwestern counties brought winds up to 40 mph and small hail, although the majority of the region only saw light showers.

Showers and Storms Possible

Saturday night promises to be mild and muggy, with temperatures expected to fall into the 60s. There remains roughly a 20% chance of experiencing passing showers.

Sunday marks the final warm day before a robust cold front moves in. Anticipate breezy conditions throughout the day, with wind gusts reaching 20-25 mph. Isolated showers and storms are also on the agenda, and a few could escalate to strong or severe levels, potentially bringing straight-line wind gusts over 40 mph and small hail.

Big Cooldown

By Sunday night, rain will have moved on, shifting the focus to the impending cold. Monday morning will be chilly and breezy, with temperatures starting in the 40s and wind chills making it feel like the 30s. Highs for the day will only reach the 50s, with winds causing a brisk feel and gusts up to 25 mph.

Tuesday morning could see record-low temperatures, dropping below freezing for many areas along and west of I-95. The current record low at SAV is 31°, but forecasts predict a dip to 30°. Most inland areas will experience lows in the 20s, with widespread wind chills in the same range. The day will remain cold, with highs sticking to the 50s. Another bout of widespread frost and freeze is likely by Wednesday morning, especially west of I-95.

Remember the 4 P’s, including people, plants, pipes and pets. Check on neighbors and be sure you have adequate heating indoors. Be sure to wear multiple layers outdoors during the morning hours. Cover up delicate plants or bring them inside so they do not suffer damage. Exposed outdoor pipes should be wrapped, but this will not be a pipe-bursting freeze for indoor plumbing. Last but not least, bring pets inside or provide extra warmth in a shelter and try to limit moisture and exposure to wind.

Warming Up

A warming trend is expected for the middle to end of the week, with Wednesday’s highs reaching the 60s. Temperatures moderate closer to seasonal normals by the end of the week, with mornings in the 40s and afternoons in the 70s under plenty of sunshine.
