Rabid fox located in Burke County

BURKE COUNTY, Ga. () – Burke County Animal Services is alerting residents that a fox in the county tested positive for rabies this week.

Animal Services reported that on May 28, authorities were notified about a fox trying to attack people near Middle Ground Road and Porter Carswell Road. The same day, the fox was taken away from the vicinity.

Georgia’s Department of Health confirmed on June 3 that test results of the fox came back positive for rabies.

The public is urged to ensure that pets and other animals are vaccinated for rabies or up to date on vaccination by a licensed veterinarian.

People are warned to avoid contact with wild animals, especially if they are “acting outside of their normal behavior.”

Residents spotting any concerning animal in the county should reach out to the Burke County Health Department or the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
