JOHNSON CITY, Tenn., (WJHL) – The Meet the Mountains Festival kicked off its seventh year Friday evening at Winged Deer Park.

The event boasts activities such as kayaking, ziplining, live music, and a dog splash contest. It invites community members from various regions to enjoy the excitement of outdoor adventures.

Executive Director of Visit Johnson City, Brenda Whitmore, said the beauty of East Tennessee inspired the festival.

“I believe the allure stems from the abundance of natural beauty in our area,” she noted. “With the mountains, as well as natural attractions like lakes and bike trails, places such as Buffalo Mountain Park provide these experiences. We need to highlight these features to those who may be unfamiliar with them.”

The festival also features dozens of vendors and food options.

Ally McElroy, who owns Soluna Sage Yoga Studio, will conduct a yoga session at the festival on Saturday morning. She emphasized that the natural setting plays a crucial role in her practice.

“What I appreciate about our current space is our capability to offer an indoor-outdoor blend within the studio,” she mentioned. “We love to open our garage and front doors while practicing, allowing us to incorporate the weather elements. It’s quite fascinating to experience that as we practice.”

Whitmore added that it’s an opportunity for people to learn about wilderness safety and caring for the environment.

“It’s vital for us to discuss ways to compost and ensure that when we’re hosting events or camping, or spending time in nature, we leave without a trace,” Whitmore emphasized. “This principle is crucial.”

The festival is free and open to the community. It will continue Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

“We invite everyone to come out and enjoy this fantastic, free festival,” she encouraged. “It’s suitable for all ages, offering a perfect chance to bring your family and have an enjoyable time.”
