St. Joseph's Hospital celebrates 150 years serving Savannah

SAVANNAH, Ga. () — St. Joseph’s Hospital celebrated a major milestone Friday marking their 150th-year serving the Savannah community.

Dignitaries, longtime staff and supporters gathered to honor the hospital’s history and look ahead to its future.

What began as a small marine hospital for sick sailors grew into a regional health leader over the years.

The rich history of the hospital was showcased, highlighting significant milestones such as the inauguration of its School of Nursing in 1902, its relocation to the southside in 1970, and numerous expansions, renovations, and dedication to community care over the decades.

The hospital is currently recognized as St. Joseph’s/Candler following a partnership with Candler Hospital. According to the St. Joseph’s/Candler website, this partnership established the region’s most extensive healthcare provider.

Leaders at St. Joseph’s have expressed that the next chapter will maintain a focus on patient-centered care and innovation, while upholding a 150-year legacy of service.
