Champaign man recognizes fathers, mentors inspiring kids

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Father’s Day is an occasion to express gratitude to family members and mentors for their guidance and affection. Herbert Burnett understands the challenges of fulfilling this role and is celebrating those who exceed expectations.

Burnett is the founder of Hood ll Hood —  a mentorship program that works to put kids on a positive path no matter their circumstances.

“Our goal is to mentor the youth that nobody else wants to mentor,” Burnett said.

He recognizes it’s not just an individual effort but requires the support of an entire community. On Sunday, Burnett presented trophies to 12 fathers for their role in inspiring their children and other youth.

“We need to show them appreciation, demonstrate that we value them,” Burnett remarked. “In 2025, many people are primarily focused on their own lives. Few dedicate quality time to support other individuals and families.”

Burnett hopes Sunday’s event inspires fathers to be present, and shows children the value of dreaming beyond their situation.
