‘Such trauma:’ Child calls 911 after dad smokes heroin, Volusia sheriff says

Child Contacts 911 After Father Allegedly Smokes Heroin, Reports Volusia Sheriff

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – An 8-year-old boy is being hailed as a hero for his quick thinking that saved his father’s life after discovering him unconscious on Tuesday, as reported by the Volusia Sheriff’s Office.

According to a statement from deputies, the child promptly dialed 911 and administered Narcan to his father until emergency services arrived and transported him to the hospital.

The report mentions that “Daniel Johnson, 44, admitted to deputies that he consumed heroin earlier in the garage and had given his son instructions on how to respond should an emergency arise.”

Following treatment at the hospital, Johnson was taken into custody. He is now facing charges that include child neglect, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Sheriff Mike Chitwood remarked, “I want to applaud the extraordinary bravery of this young boy who, though only 8 years old, was thrust into a situation no child should have to endure. His actions unquestionably saved his father’s life, but it is heartbreaking that he must confront such hardship at such a young age.”
