Newly released video captures the aftermath of a fatal teen stabbing at a Texas track meet

FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Newly released footage from a police body camera and a stadium surveillance camera shows the chaotic aftermath of a fatal stabbing in the bleachers during a Texas high school track meet last year, where one teenage athlete killed another from a rival team.

Karmelo Anthony, 19, was found guilty of murder on June 10 in the death of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf and was sentenced to 35 years in prison. Jurors rejected Anthony’s argument that he acted in self-defense. The videos were part of a collection of evidence made public by the Collin County court after the trial ended.

The silent surveillance video shows the track and bleacher area on a rainy day. In the footage, a person wearing a gray sweatshirt suddenly appears from behind a yellow tent before running down the steps.

The figure reaches the bottom of the bleachers, stumbles and falls, then gets back up and continues running along the fence line separating the seating area from the track. At one point, he pauses, turns back toward someone who appears to be following him, and then keeps moving.

After heading partway around the track, Anthony is joined by an unidentified person. The two stop briefly, speak and hug before walking on. Another person later joins them. Following another short exchange, Anthony moves toward the fence, where he appears to encounter a police officer.

Body camera footage shows the officer placing Anthony in handcuffs and escorting him toward a police cruiser. Anthony follows the officer’s instructions, then begins to cry.

“He put his hands on me,” Anthony says, his voice breaking. “I told him not to. He put his hands on me.”

Officers then lead Anthony to the patrol vehicle and place him inside.
