HONOLULU (KHON) – As a bride and groom were getting ready to say “I do” on Tuesday in Hawaii, a tsunami warning dampened the couple’s plans.

The couple had traveled to Kauai to tie the knot, but their destination wedding turned into a natural disaster.

The bride was not prepared to walk down the aisle serenaded by sirens as the tsunami watch escalated to a tsunami warning.

The not-so-happy couple evacuated to higher ground, where fate led them to Kauai Firefighter III Abraham Mohr.

“I happened to be off that day, I got a call from an on-duty fire captain up there,” Mohr said. “He said, there’s a couple up here right now. You know, the lady is in her wedding dress, hair done, ready to go. The guy is in a tuxedo. Can you be here? I said, yeah, give me five minutes, we’re just down the road.”

Mohr jumped into action before the couple’s plans went up in flames, and officiated the wedding.

“As a married person, it’s a really big deal on your day and you know you make all those plans and you’re ready to go, and I think sometimes for stuff like that it’s not about where you’re at, but the experience of it,” Mohr said. “Even for me to be part of that was a really neat thing and something I’m glad I got to do. I’m glad the whole fire department got to kind of play a part in that as well.”

Everyone seeking safety gathered around to witness the impromptu ceremony with no objections.
