Danville Resident Receives 7-Year Sentence for 2023 Shooting Incident

A Danville man implicated in a 2023 shooting incident has been sentenced to seven years in prison for illegal firearm possession. The sentence was handed down last week.

Kaydo Moreman, 28, accepted a plea agreement on October 31, acknowledging his guilt for possessing a weapon unlawfully as a felon. In exchange for his guilty plea, three additional charges were dismissed against him.

Aggravated battery with a firearm (Class X)
Possession of a controlled substance (Class 4)
Aggravated unlawful use of a weapon without a valid FOID card (Class 4)

The charges originated from a shooting on November 15, 2023, when Danville Police responded to gunfire in the vicinity of Main and South Streets. They discovered an 18-year-old victim suffering from a gunshot wound to his left thigh. Officers administered first aid until medical personnel arrived.

According to previous reports by WCIA, the victim stated he encountered verbal threats while walking in the area. The confrontation escalated, and as he attempted to walk away, shots were fired, striking him. Fortunately, the victim was hospitalized but was expected to recover.

Further investigation by police, including surveillance footage analysis, led to Moreman’s identification. He was seen outside a nearby establishment holding a .40 caliber handgun. Searches of two locations Moreman frequented after the incident revealed the weapon, which was later confirmed to carry Moreman’s DNA.

Moreman has a previous felony conviction for unlawful possession of a firearm. State’s Attorney Jacqueline Lacy thanked the witnesses who came forward, along with the Danville Police Department for their work.

“Every time law enforcement takes a gun out of the hands of a repeat offender, it helps to make our neighborhoods safer. We will continue to work with police to protect our community,” Lacy said.

Moreman was sentenced to seven years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Moreman will serve a term of one-year mandatory supervised release following his release from prison. The plea and sentencing hearing were presided over by Judge Karen Wall.
