Decatur Fire Dept. responds to Saturday night house fire

DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — The Decatur Fire Department responded to multiple fires on July Fourth.

The fire department reported that they initially responded to a shed on S. Illinois St. that was “fully engulfed” in flames around 11 p.m. The teams managed to extinguish the fire swiftly.

During the response to the shed fire, another incident was reported on N. 34th, according to officials. Firefighters attended to the second blaze around 11:30 p.m. Upon arrival, they found intense fire conditions at the residence. Additionally, a portion of the basement floor had collapsed.

The firefighters battled the fire for approximately three hours until it was completely extinguished. Officials mentioned that the home was unoccupied during the time of the fire but was undergoing renovations.

The Decatur Fire Department is investigating both fires. As of Saturday evening, officials said they could not confirm if fireworks caused either fire.

Decatur fire crews also responded to several small fire rubbish, dumpster and garbage throughout the night — including one which damaged the outside of an occupied home, fire officials said.
