Woman confesses to slashing husband’s throat while he slept over financial problems: deputies

ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A woman has been jailed after authorities said she attempted to kill her husband inside their home. The couple reportedly operated a local barbecue restaurant together.

According to the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office, 58-year-old Paula Marlowe was taken into custody and charged with attempted first-degree murder.

Deputies said they were dispatched around 2:52 a.m. Tuesday, June 30, to the area of Godbey Road and Woodleaf Road to assist emergency medical crews. When they arrived, they found a man suffering from a severe cut to his neck that extended down toward his shoulder, the sheriff’s office said.

Marlowe, the victim’s wife, allegedly told deputies her husband woke her while bleeding and said he needed to get to a hospital. She said she was in the process of driving him there.

Investigators with the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division later went to the couple’s home in the 880 block of Needmore Road. During an interview, officials said Marlowe admitted she had tried to kill her husband while he was asleep.

Authorities said Marlowe told investigators she had planned to kill her husband, set their house on fire and then die by suicide because of financial problems. Investigators believe she became frightened during the attack and left the bedroom, interrupting the plan.

The victim suffered serious injuries but is expected to survive and remains under medical care. Officials said the family has been informed about the incident and Marlowe’s alleged confession.

Following her confession, Paula Marlowe was arrested and charged with Attempted First-Degree Murder. Additional charges could be coming.

According to business records, the couple owns Marlow’s Bar-B-Q and Seafood in Salisbury. The restaurant will be closed until further notice.
