ORLANDO, Fla. – In the latest edition of Trooper Steve on Patrol, we revisit a notorious intersection that once struck fear into the hearts of state troopers responding to crash reports.

That infamous junction is where Sand Lake Road meets Turkey Lake Road.

During my days as a state trooper, receiving a call to this location signaled two certainties: the accident was likely severe, and reaching the scene would be no easy task.

Sand Lake Road, particularly near the I-4 corridor, has long been notorious for its heavy traffic and daunting congestion. A mix of tourist vehicles, local commuters, and frequent traffic snarls made navigating this intersection a formidable challenge.

However, the situation there has undergone a remarkable transformation.

A significant improvement is the introduction of a dedicated ramp on Turkey Lake Road. This new feature effectively channels traffic, reducing the congestion that used to plague Sand Lake Road and offering a smoother journey for drivers heading towards Turkey Lake.

And honestly? I love it.

As somebody who spent years responding to crashes in that corridor, it’s nice seeing traffic flow improvements that not only make driving easier, but can also help emergency responders get where they need to go faster.

On this patrol, I wanted to show you what the redesign looks like from the driver’s perspective and walk you through some of the biggest changes in the area.

If you’ve driven through there recently, you’ve probably already noticed the difference.

Check out this edition of Trooper Steve on Patrol.
