VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – In an unusual twist, a 36-year-old man involved in a high-speed crash of a BMW convertible in Volusia County claimed he was “teleported” into the vehicle, denying any theft, as reported by sheriff’s officials.
The incident unfolded on Monday at the intersection of Old Dixie Highway and Plantation Oaks Boulevard. According to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office, Calvin Curtis Johnson allegedly took the car from Bicentennial Park.
Authorities revealed that the BMW was left unlocked with its keys inside a closed cupholder while its owner was out walking his dog, providing an opportunity for the vehicle’s theft.

Shortly after the car was reported stolen, it was involved in a crash. Bystanders assisted the driver in exiting the vehicle, as noted by the sheriff’s office.
Johnson, who admitted to driving at excessive speeds at the time of the accident, insisted to deputies that he did not steal the car and claimed instead that he was mysteriously teleported into it.
Johnson was taken to a hospital for treatment and will be jailed on charges of grand theft of a motor vehicle and driving with a suspended license.
“Reminder: Please lock your vehicle while you’re enjoying our parks!” the sheriff’s office said in a social media post.
