ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) — A homicide inquiry was initiated Sunday after a man was shot inside a car that also contained a toddler, according to the St. Petersburg Police Department.

Authorities reported they were initially called to a scene where a vehicle had collided with a parked car at an auto shop located on Emerson Avenue South. The incident took place shortly after 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 7.

Upon arrival, emergency personnel found that the driver, 21-year-old Tyrone Howard, had suffered a gunshot wound. Found alongside him in the car was an 18-month-old girl.

Authorities said the toddler was not injured but was taken to Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital to be checked out.

Howard was taken to Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital, where he died from his injuries, according to the police department.

As of Sunday night, investigators were actively trying to piece together what led to the shooting. The police mentioned that it was still “very early in the investigation.”
