Tribute statue at EIU honors beloved stray dog from 1945

CHARLESTON, Ill. (WCIA) — Napoleon is the name of one pooch that is now forever immortalized at Eastern Illinois University.

In 1945, a stray golden retriever mix made its way onto EIU’s quad, quickly winning over the hearts of students. The dog, affectionately known to the community as Napoleon, became a cherished presence on campus and was embraced by the entire student body.

Napoleon was frequently spotted at football games, concerts, and even during exams. The dog turned into the school’s unofficial mascot, as Napoleon slept in dorms, ate in the cafeteria, and participated in numerous student traditions. For 15 years, Napoleon was present at every commencement ceremony at EIU.

On Friday, a memorial was unveiled on the university’s quad, overlooking one of Napoleon’s favorite spots.

“This tribute celebrates his unwavering loyalty and love for EIU, reminding all students and alumni of the bond they share with their university,” stated the EIU Alumni Association in a Facebook post.
