SAVANNAH, Ga. () — Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr has filed a lawsuit against the City of Savannah’s firearm regulation ordinance.
In April, the city of Savannah adopted two local ordinances proposed by Mayor Van Johnson that would regulate firearms left visible in unlocked cars.
Gun owners who don’t comply to these regulations could face up to a $1,000 fine or 30 days in jail.
On Monday, Attorney General Chris Carr stated that he has initiated a lawsuit against the city, arguing that the city’s ordinances conflict with state law, rendering them invalid.
“This misguided effort to penalize law-abiding Georgians fails entirely to tackle crime, and it will not withstand judicial scrutiny,” Carr asserted. “Regardless of the Mayor’s opposition to our laws, he cannot blatantly infringe upon the Second Amendment rights of our residents. Progressive politics do not justify governmental overreach.”
Johnson reported that last year in Savannah, 244 firearms were stolen, with 203 taken from cars that had been left unlocked. By April of the current year, 60 firearms had been reported stolen, 56 of which were taken from unlocked vehicles.
