COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — With the federal government shutdown dragging on, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp has addressed rising concerns over the possible disruption of SNAP benefits for state residents.

During a conversation with WRBL News 3 on Wednesday, Kemp expressed the state’s inability to shoulder federal benefits burdens. He attributed the continued deadlock to Democratic lawmakers, specifically naming Georgia’s U.S. senators, Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock.

“We are calling on our two U.S. senators and their peers from across the aisle to cast their votes for a straightforward continuing resolution, just as they did 13 times previously when Joe Biden was president, to reopen the government,” Kemp stated.

He emphasized, “We’re not in a position to rescue the federal government financially. Our resources are insufficient to undertake such a task. Even if we did, there’s no certainty those funds would be reimbursed.”

As the shutdown enters its third week, federal assistance programs like SNAP are at risk of being affected unless a resolution is achieved in Washington.
