JERUSALEM – The Israeli military announced it successfully intercepted a missile launched by Yemen’s Houthi rebels on Sunday.

The missile triggered air raid sirens in Jerusalem and other areas. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

The Houthi rebels, who are supported by Iran, have consistently targeted Israel with missile strikes and have also threatened international shipping lanes in the Red Sea. These actions are framed as a retaliation for Israel’s military operations against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, despite the fact that most of the vessels targeted were unrelated to Israel or the existing conflict.

Earlier in the month, the United States suspended its intensive bombing campaign against the Houthis, citing a commitment by the rebels to halt attacks on ships. However, this informal ceasefire did not extend to assaults on Israel.
