JCPD: 1 injured, man arrested following downtown shooting

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — The Johnson City Police Department (JCPD) is requesting residents to review their surveillance footage and inspect their properties following an incident where a man allegedly attempted to break into homes and discharged a firearm after committing theft at a country club.

A news release from the JCPD states Axel Lara, 24, of Johnson City, was arrested Wednesday and charged with the following:

  • 2 counts of attempted aggravated burglary
  • 2 counts of possession of a weapon during commission/attempt to commit a dangerous felony
  • Joyriding

Lara was arrested after officers were called to a report of shots fired near Woodland Ave around 2:15 a.m.

Police report that an individual named Lara took a golf cart from the Johnson City Country Club and drove it through the surrounding neighborhood, attempting to enter houses. During this incident, Lara is also suspected of firing a weapon.

After his arrest, Lara was transported to the Washington County Detention Center.

The JCPD urges residents in the areas of Woodland Ave, Broadway St, East Unaka Ave, and Lakeview Rd to review their security cameras and examine their properties for any signs of damage or stolen items.
