KINGSPORT, Tenn. (WJHL) — The City of Kingsport revealed on Tuesday that its Main Street Rebuild project has been honored with an award for “Excellence in Economic and Community Development.”
As stated in a news release, the city will receive the award at the 85th Annual Tennessee Municipal League (TML) Conference, which will be held in Chattanooga on August 5.

This $20 million initiative involved upgrading water, sewer, and stormwater systems, relocating overhead utilities underground, and reinforcing deteriorating road foundations.
Enhancements to make downtown “more inviting and accessible” for the community were also implemented in the plan.
“By updating the roadway, utilities, and streetscaping in one comprehensive project, the city improved efficiency of the project, saved taxpayer funds, and enhanced the delivery and reliability of vital utility services to the Main Street community,” the city said in the news release. “The utility modernization also prevents expensive emergency repairs and minimizes the need for future maintenance.”
