LARGO, Fla. (WFLA) — Police in Largo are alerting the public about a reported fundraising scam involving people pretending to be high school athletes collecting money for a sports team.
According to the Largo Police Department, the scheme often starts in busy shopping plazas, where individuals may approach shoppers with a convincing story and ask them to buy candy to support a team fundraiser. From there, the request may shift to scanning a QR code or making a payment through a donation app.
“While many legitimate youth organizations fundraise in our community, scammers know that people are happy to support local students and they’re taking advantage of that kindness,” the Largo Police Department said.
To help residents avoid falling victim to the Largo fundraiser scam, police are urging people to keep these safety tips in mind:
If anyone sees any suspicious fundraising activity, they are asked to call the non-emergency line at 727-587-6730 to report it.
“Your call could help prevent someone else from becoming a victim,” the Largo Police Department said.
